Key Aspect

Designed to create maximum impact the new college will provide 21st century opportunities for all and will have a hugely positive effect on the community it intends to serve for many years in the future.

The superb environmentally friendly fourstorey building boasts state-of-the-art modern technology classrooms, workshops, seminar rooms, lecture theatre, games halls and catering facilities is pointing the way for the future of education and training.

RMJM's design for the new building creates a strong, contemporary identity for the College and materials such as concrete, glass, timber and stone elements  reflect this. Welcoming public realm space around the development is further enhanced by extensive landscape design and artwork, creating new connections to the surrounding areas and the Spring burn rail station.

Internally, the College departments are rationalised around a central modeled atrium space, which allows natural light to flood the building to the ground floor. The atrium is home to the new learning resource centre, off which key facilities such as the lecture theatre, sports hall, conference and student support facilities are located.

This new social heart and primary circulation routes are easily accessible and visible from the street.

The reception area welcomes visitors to the building and presents a grand staircase which rises to the first floor where the multimedia area is located. A scenic lift also provides access to the upper floors.

At first floor level additional single height workshops are located together with the central hub of the learning resource centre, an atrium above provides a great deal of natural light which floods through the double height spaces and voids.

A double bank of classroom accommodation is accessed at second floor level, together with open plan study and ITR areas. Administration and staff accommodation overlooks the landscaped plaza, with a double height board room at the end looking onto Flemington Street.

Further classroom accommodation is found at second, third and fourth floor level plus open plan study and IT areas and staff accommodation. The building itself comprises a complex concrete structure with steel workshops and the design has been carefully constructed to allow as much natural daylight and ventilation as possible into the building

Sustainability
Energy efficiency - the full height atrium facilitates natural ventilation.
Water Minimisation - Rainwater is harvested and used to flush toilets within the building, reducing usage of potable water.
Procurement -  high sustainability standards set in all contracts - design, construction methods, furniture, office cleaning, new office equipment, waste management, grounds management.
